When I was a kid I delivered the Toronto Star. After collecting what was owed by those on my route each week and sending the Star their share, I would go to the bank and deposit the profit. Once a month my dad (who was the bank manager) would update my bankbook and I would see the interest put into my account. I was hooked.

Times have changed since the early seventies and you really don't earn much interest any more. Now you have to work harder to see that monthly growth. It comes from bonds, dividends and distributions now.
